Researchers in Spain say they may have found the oldest remains of a human relative ever discovered in Europe. They think that an upper jawbone, unearthed at a site in the Atapuerca mountain range famous for having lots of human remains, could be around 1.4 million years old.
If confirmed, this would make the jawbone 200,000 years older than the oldest human remains previously found in Europe (which were discovered at the Atapuerca site in 2007). It’s not clear yet which species the fossil came from, but its shape suggests it came from a face like that of a modern human rather than that of an earlier, more ape-like human relative.
