Scientists have built a four-legged, dog-sized robot that taught itself to walk in just an hour. It’s hoped that the Labrador-sized machine, named Morti, will improve our understanding of how baby animals take their first steps. Newborn animals often fall over when they try to walk for the first time, but they learn from these stumbles and soon make adjustments to walk steadily. To do this, they rely on reflexes from their spinal cord – a bundle of natural signal-carrying fibres that connect the brain and other parts of the body. Morti the robot also learns from its mistakes; a clever algorithm (a set of instructions that tell a computer how to perform a task) allows it to compare feedback from pressure sensors on its mechanical feet with the pressure…
