31 January 1983 British drivers ordered to belt up 42 years ago, a new law meant that all car drivers and front-seat passengers had to wear seatbelts. Until then, wearing a seatbelt had been optional and only about four in 10 people used one. Although the new law led to a decrease in deaths and serious injuries, some people complained that the law was limiting their personal freedom. In 1991, the law changed again so that passengers in the back seats of cars also had to wear seatbelts.…
