Archaeologists (experts who study ancient objects to help us understand history) have made spectacular new discoveries in Pompeii, offering historians a further glimpse into what life in the Roman city was like. Pompeii, in southern Italy, was an ancient city that was buried under a thick blanket of ash when a volcano called Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79, almost 2,000 years ago. The city was uncovered by archaeologists in 1748 and since then, experts have been able to study the buildings, artworks and objects they have found – many of which have been perfectly preserved underground.
