19 January 1966 Indira Gandhi becomes India’s leader Indira Gandhi, India’s first and only female leader, became Prime Minister 59 years ago. Born in 1917, she was the daughter of India’s first leader after it gained independence from Britain. When she was accused of dishonest behaviour in 1975, Gandhi reacted by limiting freedom for India’s citizens. She lost the next election, but was re-elected in 1980 and stayed in power until she was assassinated (killed for political reasons) in 1984.…
