Thousands of toys hit the ice On 5 January, thousands of teddy bears were thrown onto an ice rink while an ice hockey match was being played in Pennsylvania, US. For 24 years, it has been an annual tradition that when the Hershey Bears score their first goal at a home game called the Teddy Bear Toss, fans throw stuffed animals onto the ice. Hershey Bears describe the celebration as “sweet cuddly mayhem”. Players, including goal scorer Mike Sgarbossa, found themselves skating across the ice surrounded by 102,343 stuffed animals. Afterwards, the soft toys were cleaned up and donated to more than 30 local children’s charities.
