Florida manatee

New research has found that Florida manatees, also known as sea cows, are not native to the US state. Scientists now think that the animals probably only started moving to the area in the 18th century. • LIFESPAN: Up to 60 years in the wild. • HABITAT: Florida’s warm waters, including rivers and coastal areas. • SIZE: Around three metres long, weighing around 500kg. • DIET: Aquatic plants, including seagrasses and leaves from mangroves (trees that grow in coastal waters). • FUN FACT: Unlike humans, manatees lose teeth all through their lives.
