Huge Hindu festival under way

The world’s largest religious gathering, Kumbh Mela, is under way in India, with celebrations for the Hindu festival beginning on 13 January. Hindus from all over the world make the pilgrimage (a journey to a holy place) and roughly 400 million people are expected to attend the festival this year. The religious event takes place once every 12 years in the city of Prayagraj, in northern India, where three rivers meet – the Ganges, the Yamuna and a mythical, invisible river called the Saraswati, which is named after a Hindu goddess. These rivers have great importance in the Hindu faith and are considered sacred.
