Edinburgh introduces a tourist tax

The capital of Scotland is to introduce a tourist tax for visitors staying overnight in the city. The new scheme means it will cost tourists 5% more to stay in one of Edinburgh’s hotels, holiday homes or campsites. The new tax will affect people who make a booking from 1 May this year, if they are visiting Edinburgh from July 2026 onwards. For longer visits to the city, the charge will be applied just to the first five nights of the stay. At least 4,000 accommodation providers are believed to be affected. The Scottish Parliament passed a new law last year giving local councils in Scotland the power to charge visitors a tourist tax on overnight stays.
