What happens when you flush?

1 When you flush the loo in the UK, the waste (wee and poo) goes down a drain and into a sewer, which is a system of underground tunnels and pipes. The waste ends up at a sewage-treatment works, where it can be cleaned. 2 First, larger objects that should not have been flushed down the loo are removed from the sewage. Then solid matter (poo) is filtered out. The rest of the sewage is put in large tanks where scrapers slowly move around, pushing any sludge to the centre where it is pumped away. 3 The water that’s left is carefully cleaned to get rid of germs, and is eventually returned to local rivers and streams.
