Crowds gather to mark Epiphany

Christians around the world celebrated Epiphany on 6 January. This event falls 12 days after Christmas and is when Christians celebrate the three wise men, or kings, visiting baby Jesus. According to the Bible, the three (also called the Magi) were guided by the Star of Bethlehem and brought with them gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh (a resin used in medicine and incense). In Spanish-speaking countries (and some others), the festival is known as Día de los Reyes Magos (Day of the Three Kings). Children write letters to the three kings, called Gaspar, Balthasar and Melchior, and before they go to sleep, leave out drinks and empty shoes to be filled with presents by the kings.
