In January, the trees are bare and it’s a great time to spot tree-dwelling birds such as the treecreeper. This small, energetic bird is found over most of the UK. It has a long, thin beak that curves slightly downwards and can pick up insects such as earwigs and spiders hiding under tree bark. Treecreepers hunt for food by moving up and around a tree trunk, as if they are going up an invisible spiral staircase. They are about 12.5 centimetres long and are speckled brown on top with white underneath and a white stripe above their eye.
