Snow, ice and rain sweeps the UK

Snow, ice, rain and freezing weather across the UK caused travel disruption and power cuts, and forced hundreds of schools to close. Several centimetres of snow fell over parts of the UK during the first weekend of the year, but the coldest conditions were in Scotland, where temperatures dropped to -13° C on 6 January. The Met Office, the organisation that monitors the UK’s weather, issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across many parts of the UK on 6 January, including Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and areas of northern and southern England.
