Protests erupt in South Korea

On 4 and 5 January, thousands of protesters gathered outside the home of Yoon Suk-yeol in Seoul, South Korea’s capital. Yoon was the president of the country but was removed from power on 14 December. Some of the protesters showed support for him, while others demanded his arrest. Why was Yoon removed from power? On 3 December, Yoon announced that there would be martial law in the country (when control of a country is temporarily handed to the military). Parliament voted to block this plan and Yoon changed his mind. He claimed he had declared martial law to protect South Korea, particularly from its neighbour, North Korea.
