People have been looking up at the stars for thousands of years.

Winter is a great time to go stargazing. The cold air is often clearer than in summer, when warm weather can cause hazy skies. It also gets darker earlier, so there’s no need to stay up too late to peer at the stars. This month there are dark skies festivals taking place around the UK, including in Yorkshire and the South Downs in England. At these, budding stargazers can learn more about the night sky. What is a star? Stars look like twinkling lights in the sky but they are actually massive glowing balls of gas with a very hot core.
