Researchers have found a new and environmentally friendly way of catching scallops that involves using pots fitted with lights. A seafood restaurant group called Rockfish has just added the shellfish – now named “Disco Scallops” – onto its menus.Currently, about 95% of scallops in the UK are caught by dredging – dragging heavy metal nets over the seabed to scoop them up. In the process, habitats are harmed and other sea creatures are killed needlessly. In 2022, scientists from a company called Fishtek Marine were trialling pots with lights to try to catch crabs and lobsters, working with a fisherman called Jon Ashworth. They discovered that scallops were drawn to the flashing lights too. Video footage shows the scallops appearing to “dance” into the pots. It is not known why…
