Bird flu restrictions introduced
Strict measures to control bird flu (avian influenza) have been introduced across the UK after a rise in cases, particularly in England. Bird flu is a disease that spreads between birds in several ways, including contact with infected saliva (spit) and poo. It can spread to humans but only in rare cases and it doesn’t usually harm them. The disease can also spread to other mammals, such as cats and dogs. The Government’s Food Standards Agency says it is still safe to eat meat and eggs from poultry, such as chickens and ducks, as long as the food is properly cooked.
