15 February 1989 Last Soviet troops leave Afghanistan It is 36 years since the end of the Soviet-Afghan war. In 1979, the Soviet Union (a country made up of Russia and some of its neighbours) supported the new Afghan government, but many Afghans didn’t. Led by the mujahideen – who were Muslim and disliked the government’s lack of religious faith – people rose up. In response, the Soviet Union invaded. Pakistan and the US supported the mujahideen and finally, in 1989, the last Soviet soldiers left.…
