A patient in Sunderland, England, said he felt “cured” after an operation to reduce the symptoms (effects) of his Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a condition that damages parts of the brain and the nervous system (the network of nerves that sends messages between the brain and body). Parkinson’s affects around 153,000 people in the UK. There are more than 40 symptoms but the condition affects people differently. Common symptoms include tremors (shaking), stiffness in the muscles and slowness of movement. These worsen over time and there is no cure, but treatments have been developed to make people’s lives easier.
