On 8 February, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (also known as the Baltic states) disconnected from Russia’s electricity network. This means they no longer have to rely on Russia for their energy. Instead, the countries have connected to the European Union’s electricity grid. The European Union (EU) is a group of countries that work and trade together. The Baltic states, which all share borders with Russia, used to be part of the Soviet Union. This was a huge country that included Russia and many of its neighbours. During the time of the Soviet Union, the states were connected to a power grid with electricity supplied by Russia.
