Is it time to ditch Valentine’s Day?

Some people say it’s an excuse for companies to make money.

In the run-up to 14 February, shop displays overflow with Valentine’s Day goodies, from romantic cards and gifts to giant teddy bears and extravagant flower arrangements. In fact, an estimated 250 million flowers are sold on Valentine’s Day worldwide. Although companies make lots of money from Valentine’s Day, a lot less is known about the origins of the day. It’s not entirely clear who Saint Valentine was. One legend suggests he was a priest from Rome, Italy, in the third century AD. He is said to have written “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter after he restored her sight. Traditionally, Valentine’s Day celebrates romantic love but some people say it unfairly excludes people who aren’t in love. So, what do you think? Is it time to ditch Valentine’s Day?…
