The bridge of Mostar

In 1993, the magnificent Stari Most (Old Bridge) in the city of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was completely destroyed in an attack. This happened as part of a conflict during the break-up of Yugoslavia (a former European country made up of several modern-day countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina). UNESCO led the restoration project, which began in 1999 and continued until 2004. The public wanted the bridge, which dates back to 1566, to look exactly as it had done before. The stone for the bridge was collected from the same quarry (a pit where stone is extracted) that was used when it was originally built.…
