2 February 1990 F.W. de Klerk begins to remove apartheid Thirty-five years ago, South African president F.W. de Klerk announced that South Africa would no longer ban political groups opposing apartheid (a racist legal system where white people were in charge and black people, and people of colour, had fewer rights). De Klerk promised to release activist Nelson Mandela, who had been in prison since 1962. De Klerk and Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for ending apartheid peacefully.…
