People return to northern Gaza

On 27 January, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians began returning to northern Gaza after Israel opened up military checkpoints (places used to control the flow of people and traffic). Gaza is a small strip of territory that borders Israel and is home to Palestinian people. On 7 October 2023, a long-running conflict between Israel and Hamas (an armed group that governs Gaza) became much worse. On that date, Hamas attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 people hostage (prisoners who are held until certain demands are met). Israel responded by launching attacks on Hamas in Gaza. The Hamas-run health ministry says more than 46,000 people in Gaza have been killed.
