Surprise guests in plant deliveries

When people buy flowers or plants to decorate their homes and gardens, sometimes they come with an unexpected guest. Dr Silviu Petrovan, a frog expert at the University of Cambridge, was recently called to a flower shop in Sheffield, England, to identify a frog that had been found in some roses. He discovered that the frog was from South America. Petrovan said it must have hopped into the roses while they were travelling from Colombia to the UK. Inspired by this, Petrovan has worked with a team of researchers to find out how common it is for animals, diseases and pests (an insect or other creature that attacks crops or animals) from other parts of the world to arrive in Europe with flowers and ornamental plants.
