A student called William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it during a football match at Rugby School – although the true origin of the sport is debated. Even so, there’s no denying the impact it has had on the world. Today, hundreds of millions of people watch and play rugby every year, tempted by thrilling matches, friendly rivalries and skilful play.
