Brown hares head into woods
Usually found in “big sky country” – open landscapes like crop fields and chalk hills – brown hares often enter woods in winter to find shelter. They look quite like rabbits but are bigger, with longer legs and longer ears. They have a golden-brown body, pale belly and a white tail. Brown hares are not native to the UK – they were probably brought here by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago. They are evolved to survive the harsh winters of northern Europe and central Asia. Instead of burrowing, like rabbits, they snuggle into shallow dips in the ground called “forms”. You might spot them running across fields. They are the UK’s fastest land mammal, using their strong hind legs to reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour.…
