Covid protests rock China
On 27 and 28 November, protests took place in China against the government’s strict Covid-19 lockdowns. Some protesters have also called for China’s president, Xi Jinping, to step down. Why are people protesting? People have been protesting in at least eight cities – including China’s capital, Beijing, and largest city, Shanghai – because of the government’s “zero-Covid” policy, which aims to keep cases of Covid-19 as low as possible. The policy has led to authorities introducing very strict lockdowns. Some large cities have been completely locked down for long periods, even though there were only a small number of Covid infections.
