27 August 1939 The first jet-propelled flight takes place On 27 August 1939, a pilot called Erich Warsitz made the first successful turbo-jet flight. Warsitz flew a plane called the Heinkel He 178, developed by Ernst Heinkel, who owned an aircraft company, and Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain, who built the engine. The jet was developed in secrecy, hidden from everyone including the German air force. Days after the first flight, Germany invaded Poland and the Second World War (1939–1945) began.…
