Students achieve record results

This year’s GCSE results were released on 12 August and students achieved a record number of top grades. What are GCSEs? GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. These are qualifications that are usually awarded after students take exams at the end of Year 11. This year, for the second year in a row, there were no exams because of the pandemic. Instead, grades were decided by teachers, based on work students did throughout the year. In Wales, grades are given out as letters; A*is the highest. In England, grades are given out as numbers: a four is a pass and the top grade is a nine. Students in Northern Ireland can receive letter or number grades.
