Pompeii eatery reopens

An ancient fast-food restaurant, preserved in the ashes of Pompeii, has opened to the public. Pompeii was an ancient city in southern Italy that was covered in ash after the nearby volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79. Since its rediscovery about 250 years ago, many of its ruins have been dug out by archaeologists – experts who study the past from man-made objects often dug up at ancient sites. The “thermopolium” (Latin for “hot-drink counter”) was unearthed in 2019. It was a place where hot food and drink was sold – an ancient equivalent of today’s fast-food restaurants. These eateries were popular with Pompeii’s poorer residents, who didn’t have kitchens in their homes; there were probably about 150 of them around the city. The sudden burial by ash has preserved…
