A“dragon”down under

A prehistoric pterosaur discovered in Australia has been described as the “closest thing to a real life dragon”. Pterosaurs were flying reptiles that lived during the age of the dinosaurs. They once lived on every continent but the new species is just the fourth to be found in Australia – and the largest so far. The find came to light in June 2011, when part of a jawbone was found by Len Shaw, a council worker in north-west Queensland who enjoyed hunting for fossils (the preserved remains of prehistoric life) during his lunch breaks. Shaw contacted a local museum and since then the remains have been studied by researchers led by Tim Richards from the University of Queensland.
