Mysterious red jellyfish discovered off US coast
A striking red jellyfish unknown to scientists has been discovered during a dive into an underwater canyon off the coast of New England, in the US. The mysterious species was found during an expedition by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a US government agency responsible for checking and protecting the climate and environment. Using a remotely operated vehicle called Deep Discoverer, the NOAA team completed a series of dives in the Atlantic Ocean from 30 June to 29 July. On 28 July, they spotted the jellyfish at a depth of around 700 metres. This area, between 200 and 1,000 metres deep, is known as the mesopelagic zone, or twilight zone.
