The godfather of sudoku
Maki Kaji, the Japanese “godfather” of sudoku, has died aged 69. Sudoku is a puzzle where people have to fill in a grid with numbers. Kaji created a puzzle magazine in the 1980s and introduced sudoku, taking inspiration from an existing puzzle. Now millions of people play the game and there are world championships each year. Sudokus and other number games are thought to be a good way to keep the brain active. In 2007, Kaji told the BBC why people love puzzles. “It’s like finding treasure,” he said. “It’s not about whether it will make money, it is purely the excitement of trying to solve it.”…
