How reading makes us brave

Writer Jasbinder Bilan followed her dream.

Author Jasbinder Bilan was born on a farm in India, near the Himalayan mountains. There, she lived with her brothers, sisters and all her extended family, as well as “a grumpy camel and a dear monkey called Oma,” she tells The Week Junior, ahead of the release of her new book Aarti and the Blue Gods. When Bilan was 18 months old, her family moved to Nottingham, in England. Her grandmother, whom she calls her Majee, would tell them stories of Oma and the farm. Bilan became a teacher before she started writing books, a dream she had secretly held for a long time. “There’s a magical age around the end of primary school, when you may have dreams about the things you’d love to do,” she says.
