Europe’s tallest active volcano, Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, has just got even taller. The volcano’s southeastern crater is now 3,357 metres above sea level, which is the tallest the volcano has ever been. The new height was announced by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology on 10 August. For the past 40 years, the northeastern crater was the tallest part of the volcano. It measured 3,350 metres above sea level after an eruption in 1981, before shrinking to 3,326 metres in 2018. This was after the edges of the crater had collapsed. Mount Etna has four summit craters. Etna’s height changes because of volcanic eruptions. “Etna changes continuously, it’s her nature,” said Stefano Branca, who is the director of the Etna Observatory.
