What you need to know • Emojis are symbols that represent certain objects or emotions. They were invented by Shigetaka Kurita in 1999. • New emojis are introduced every year by an organisation called the Unicode Consortium. In September, it will decide on a new set of emojis, which could include a salute and a disco ball. • A recent report in the Wall Street Journal pointed out that people from different age groups interpreted the smiley face emoji in different ways. Those over the age of 30 saw it as a happy symbol, whereas younger people said they used it sarcastically. There has been a rapid rise in the use of emojis over the past decade.
