What happened on 9/11?

On 11 September 2001, several people from the terrorist group Al-Qaeda hijacked passenger aeroplanes and flew two of them into two skyscrapers in New York, in the US. These events, known as 9/11, killed about 3,000 people. The Al-Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden, was in Afghanistan, being protected by the Taliban. In 2001, the US declared war on Afghanistan to tackle the threat of terrorism, remove the Taliban from power and build peace under a new Afghan government. The war turned into the US’s longest conflict. More than 3,500 troops who were sent to Afghanistan have died, including 457 British soldiers.…
