Afghanistan faces an uncertain future after a military group called the Taliban seized control of the country. On 15 August, Taliban fighters captured the capital, Kabul, and Afghanistan’s president, Ashraf Ghani, fled the country. Who are the Taliban? The Taliban is a military and political group with extreme views that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001. The Taliban says its members are followers of Islam but most Muslims regard their extreme and violent beliefs as hateful. Under Taliban rule in the late 1990s, girls were not allowed to go to school and women weren’t allowed to have jobs. Cinema, music and television were banned.
