11 August 1968 The last steam-train passenger service On 11 August 1968, the last regular steam-train passenger service ran on British railways. The train, known as the 15 Guinea Special, ran from Liverpool to Carlisle, via Manchester, and returned back to Liverpool. Some 450 rail enthusiasts made the last journey before British Rail announced a ban on steam engines on 12 August. The trains were replaced by diesel ones, but in 1971, the ban on steam trains was partially lifted and a limited number were allowed to run as tourist attractions.…
