Edinburgh Festival Fringe begins

From now until 27 August, the Scottish city of Edinburgh will be buzzing with creative artists from all over the world, who have turned up to take part in this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. From plays and dance performances to storytelling and puppetry, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The Festival Fringe began in 1947, when eight uninvited theatre groups arrived at the Edinburgh International Festival (which was held for the first time that year). The uninvited groups staged their own performances on the fringe (the border) of the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Festival Fringe was born. This year’s opening acts included Michael Morpurgo’s Kensuke’s Kingdom, a story involving puppet orangutans and Japanese war survivor Kensuke, as they battle to protect the kingdom.
