A device for hunting microplastics

Anna Du is a 12-year-old from the US who wants to protect marine animals against plastic pollution. She has created an underwater, remotely operated vehicle that can track down microplastics using infrared light. Du chose infrared light because it can help scientists tell the difference between microplastics and other, non-harmful materials underwater. The device takes photos of the plastics to help scientists find and remove them. “Plastics are already a huge problem, and then there are microplastics,” said Du. “When fish eat it, they get a toxin called bisphenol A in their bodies, and even if they poop the plastics out, they keep the toxin inside them.” Du is a finalist in the 2018 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.…
