A mythical beast turned robot
A centaur is a mythical creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse. Researchers from the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Italy, who were inspired by the centaur’s anatomy, have created a new robot called Centauro. Centauro stands at 1.5 metres tall and weighs 96 kilograms. It has four legs, which are on wheels, and two arms for completing tasks such as opening doors or using tools. It can pick its way through rubble, climb stairs and karate-chop wood. “We wanted to design a robot that can demonstrate the physical performance of a typical adult while keeping the robot’s size and weight close to the dimensions and weight of the average adult human,” said Nikos Tsagarakis, leader of the project.
