Zimbabwe’s election divides the country
On 2 August, Emmerson Mnangagwa was elected president of Zimbabwe, after a tense election campaign against Nelson Chamisa. Mnangagwa, who is leader of the Zanu-PF party, narrowly won with 50.8% of the vote. However, Chamisa, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, claims the vote was unfair. Although the voting process was peaceful, in the days after, people took to the streets to protest against Mnangagwa. They thought he had rigged the election to make sure he would win. Soldiers and police fought with protesters and six people died. The MDC says 27 of its supporters have been arrested, and believe Mnangagwa used violence and threats to stop the opposition complaining about the elections.
