The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was on 9 August.

Indigenous people are the descendants of those who lived in a country or area before another culture arrived and took over. For example, in Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were the main groups living there before the British arrived in the 18th century and established control of the country. Another example are the Aztecs, who lived in Mexico long before the Spanish arrived in the 17th century with armour, steel swords, horses and gunpowder. Invaders often used violence and force against indigenous people and caused them tremendous suffering, which still affects groups today. Many were killed by new diseases such as smallpox, which invaders accidentally introduced to the country. Today, there are more than 370 million indigenous people spread across 70 countries.
