Summer heat spoils autumn colours

This year’s combination of unusually high temperatures and lack of rain means that conditions are, so far, too dry for a traditional colourful autumn. Instead of seeing the leaves turn from green to red, orange and yellow, experts have warned that if the UK doesn’t receive more rain – and soon – the country will experience a very brown and boring-looking autumn. The Forestry Commission England, a government department responsible for England’s woodlands, says that trees need a warm yet slightly moist summer in order to build up the sugars in their leaves.
