This year’s combination of unusually high temperatures and lack of rain means that conditions are, so far, too dry for a traditional colourful autumn. Instead of seeing the leaves turn from green to red, orange and yellow, experts have warned that if the UK doesn’t receive more rain – and soon – the country will experience a very brown and boring-looking autumn. The Forestry Commission England, a government department responsible for England’s woodlands, says that trees need a warm yet slightly moist summer in order to build up the sugars in their leaves. These are what create spectacular autumn colours. “Autumn’s foliage displays are certainly affected by the weather; trees need a healthy balance of sunlight and rain to produce sugars, which create the colours in their leaves,” explains Andrew…
