Maasai inventor’s smart solution

When he was 11 years old, Richard Turere came up with a smart solution to a serious problem. As cow herders and members of the Maasai tribe (a group of people living in Kenya and Tanzania), Turere’s family rely on keeping cattle for food and milk. However, lions were killing up to nine of their cows a week. When Turere realised that the lions were scared of moving lights, he invented a solar-powered lighting system that mimicked the effect of somebody walking around with a torch. He hung the lights around the cattle pen and switched them on at night. It was a huge success – since the very first day the lights were used, no more cows were killed. Now 18, he sells his Lion Lights to other herders…
