Earthquake shakes Indonesian islands

Around 70,000 people have lost their homes following a deadly earthquake on an Indonesian island. More than 130 people are known to have died in the disaster, which mostly affected the island of Lombok. The number of dead is expected to rise after thousands of homes that were damaged or flattened have been searched. What happened? The earthquake struck at 7.46pm on 5 August, while many Muslims were praying – Islam is the most common religion in Indonesia. It was feared up to 40 people were trapped in one mosque that collapsed. Residents and tourists were plunged into darkness as the electricity failed, and the strength of the earthquake destroyed bridges, buildings, communication lines and roads.
