The amount of carbon dioxide being produced by ships at sea is going to be monitored for the first time. Most large ships are powered by fossil fuels, which when burned, give off a gas called carbon dioxide. The bigger the ship, the more of the gas it emits. Increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is linked to rising global temperatures and changing weather patterns, which is called climate change. In an attempt to tackle climate change, the International Maritime Organization – an organisation that has 170 countries as members – agreed this month that its ships would halve their carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2050. Aeroplane emissions get lots of attention, but air transport accounts for only about 2% of the world’s man-made carbon dioxide emissions.…
