There is plenty to love about sweet peas. The way they scramble riotously up cane wigwams, harnessing their butterfly-wing flowers with tendrils. And the colours of the blooms*, washed-out and gradated, like a watercolour left out in the rain. But their greatest appeal is surely their scent. Heady and sweet, it is often replicated by the perfume industry but never matched. Cut the flowers regularly to keep them coming and bring indoors to fill the house with the fragrance of summer. * The multi-coloured varieties of ornamental Sweet peas as we know them were created in the late 1800s by Scottish nurseryman Henry Eckford.
